Although I could have started this trip’s narrative at the traditional location of Terminal 6 (Continental) at LAX, it seemed that the main part of the adventure starts here at the international terminal at Boston’s Logan Airport. We left LA on Friday arriving Rhode Island to spend Saturday and most of Sunday with the girls in Greene RI. So after an Irish step dance recital where all three girls performed, a birthday party for our friend John B., and a trip to Roger Williams Park for the arboretum and the zoo, M’lyn and the girls drove us to Logan and dropped us off.
While checking in at Iceland Air we met the first of the walkers, Paul M. from the Country Walkers office. As this tour was a prototype, all the other walkers will be alumni of other tours.
We booked the tour to Iceland back in January, before Eyjafjallajökull (a/k/a the “Iceland volcano”) began erupting in March. The subtitle of the tour is “Glaciers, Volcanoes, and Waterfalls” - a presciently predicting that a glacier on top of an active volcano produces waterfalls. Fortunately the eruption has subsided, and the ring road around Iceland is open, and there has been no sign of any activity at Eyjafjallajökull’s big sister, Katla.
So after clearing security, we found our gate, but there don’t seem to be any convenient power outlets that I’m used to finding when flying through Continental hubs. Ultimately, we found one next to the terminal’s Starbucks, and are now charging up the iPhones for the five hour flight to Reykjavik.
