Home Life

I was born and raised in Blacksburg VA, graduating Blacksburg High School in 1975, and Virginia Tech in 1980 with a B.S. in Biochemistry (that's my nephew H.P. standing with me in the picture). From there, I went on to M.I.T. where I received my M.S. in Biochemical Engineering in 1983.

That's me on graduation day, standing in front of the sign for the Biochemistry and Nutrition building with H.P.

Kit Petrie, husband of Rev. Hannah Petrie, took photos for us as we were married on the staircase landing in Neighborhood House on the campus of Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena.

Jonathan and I met each other in 1983; we were introduced by mutual friends in a bar in Boston MA. The line Craig G. used was “Mark, meet Jonathan; Jonathan, meet Mark. You’re going home together.” That was 18 June 1983, and we’ve been going home together ever since. We did maintain separate households for several years, but when Jonathan returned from a stint as a Program Officer for the National Science Foundation in Washington DC, we decided it was time to move in together, and bought a house in Providence RI in the spring on 1991. Six years later, I moved to Pasadena CA for my job and Jonathan followed a year later. In 2012, we relocated to Saint Paul MN again for my job, and that is where we currently live.

In 2008, same-sex marriage became legal in California – a five-month window ended by the passage of Prop 8. Our twenty-fifth anniversary was the second day of that legality, so we took the opportunity to get married on that day (18 June 2008). The picture at the right was taken at the ceremony at Neighborhood House on the campus of Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jim Nelson and Rev. Hannah Petrie performed the service, with Scott and Clarli Wilson as our witnesses.

For hobbies, I like to read science fiction and fantasy, dabble on the computer (e.g. these web pages), follow college football (Virginia Tech is my team), and travel. I also enjoy occasional cooking. Jonathan might claim that I also enjoy naps, for all the pictures he takes of me when I’m snoozing – usually with one or more of the cats in attendance.

Of course, I can’t fail to mention my three darling daughters who were raised by their Moms (M’lyn and Diane) back in Rhode Island – Harris (left), Madison (middle), and Devlin (right).

Harris (Feb 2011)

Madison (Aug 2011)

Devlin (Aug 2011)
