November 14

10-peso piece

The day after the Farewell Dinner was 13 November, and our flight out of Punta Arenas was set for late afternoon. We wandered around town until the rain got too heavy, and returned to our hotel for a fine lunch with Sandy and Russ Mowrer. We got into Santiago fairly late, but early enough for me to see the one astronomical sight I had not yet been treated to: the new moon opening to the right instead of to the left.

I think I must have been camera-ed out by the time we got to Santiago, because I took very few pictures there, in spite of the fact that it must be, of all world capitals, the one with the most beautiful natural setting. The next day, the fourteenth, we had breakfast with the Hultins and the Scharninghausens in the seventeenth-floor restaurant of the hotel, which had absolutely spectacular views. Eileen went out onto the balcony to take some shots, and I hope I get to see the results.

Ssantiago subway Mark and I went on the Santiago subway to the Museum of Precolumbian Art, a fabulous place that should be on anybody’s itinerary if they’re passing through Santiago. The subway is clean, brightly lit, easy to use, and fast. (Small image)

Plaza de Armas The parts of the city that we saw were very pleasant, but we did not see the whole town by any means. Our impression might have been different if we had driven from and to the airport by day instead of by night. This we know, however: the traffic Saturday night the 13th was grim. (Big image; small).

We left for Panamá City some time in the wee hours of the morning the next day, and were home in Pasadena by 1:30 in the morning the day after, November 16. We bought a bottle of Pisco in the Panamá airport, and we’re on our way to demolishing it, though I haven’t yet mastered the proportions for a proper Pisco Sour.
