Torres del Paine

midday 09 November

The yellow dots show the trail we walked.

Writing on 04.11.10.0652 Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia

The Paine cordillera stood in picturesque splendor across the lake. The hike was 10 miles with minor elevation changes as we walked up the valley that feeds the lake. The path was frequently along the side of steep slopes, but it was well trod.

Walk this way…

Setting off from Hosteria Lazo into the park.

A sod house.

Across the fields.

Reflections on Laguna Verde.

Guanaco on the ridge.

A tree fungus - pan de los indios, 'bread of the indians' - it's supposedly edible.

A buffet! (Cyttaria darwinii).

Guanaco on the hillside.

And again.

More reflections on Laguna Verde.

Jonathan checking out mata guanaco (guanaco bush, Anarthrophyllum rigidum).

Another close up of mata guanaco. I used this image as the background for this travelogue.

Olga and Bill on the path along the lake.

The trail led through wooded areas also.

Another Kodak moment.

Flipping the camera.

Now get some human interest.

On to the next photo op.

Yup, they're still there.

Jonathan gets into the act.

Laguna Verde.

Laguna Verde.

Dead snags make interesting pictures.

Looking back at Hosteria Lazo over the lake.

Walking on the hillside.

The Paine Cordillera.

Pausing to take a rest and take in the landscape.

Rest stop.

We took our break on the hills overlooking Laguna Honda (Deep Lake). I think that's Russ in the red shirt.

Another view.

The rest continues, while Charlie takes a couple pictures.

Sue and Len in the foreground, Olivier, Russ, and Cecilia.

Jonathan and Janice on the hillside.

Reflections on the lake.

Jonathan taking his rest.

And again.

The Paine massif.

I was trying to get a shot of the tiny purple flowers in the center of this image. Ingrid identified it as Leuceria purpurea.
